Thirty-five years ago, on 4 September 1991, just eleven days after the proclamation of Independence, the national blue-and-yellow flag was raised above the building of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. It became a visible sign that Ukraine had restored its statehood and reclaimed its own national symbols. I am grateful to the Members of Parliament of the first convocation, whose principled position made it possible for the blue-and-yellow flag to be raised above the Ukrainian Parliament. This became another important step in affirming Ukraine’s restored Independence. On 24 February 2022, it remained flying above the Verkhovna Rada — as a symbol of a state that stood firm and continued to function despite the full-scale invasion. Over these decades, the blue and yellow colours have become recognisable far beyond Ukraine. Our flag flies outside the parliaments and government buildings of partner countries, at international venues, and in cities around the world that stand with Ukraine. I believe we should consider formally recognising 4 September in the national calendar as a date linked to the history of the Ukrainian flag. Discussion of this proposal is part of a broader effort to systematise Ukraine’s holidays, commemorative and mourning dates, and to shape a unified national “calendar map”. The flag raised above the Verkhovna Rada 35 years ago is now known around the world as a symbol of a free state defending its independence.
