تبریک به مناسبت روز استقلال گرجستان! این روز نمادی است از ارادهی ملی ما، عشق ما به آزادی و احساس مسئولیت ما. در تاریخ گرجستان، هرگز زمانی نبوده که اندیشه و مبارزه برای استقلال متوقف شده باشد. این روحیهی خستگیناپذیر از نسلی به نسل دیگر منتقل شد و همواره در انتظار پنجرهی دیگری از فرصت در تاریخ بود. جشن امروز از اهمیت ویژهای برخوردار است، چرا که امسال هزار و هفتصدمین سالگرد اعلام مسیحیت بهعنوان دین رسمی دولت گرجستان را گرامی میداریم. این تاریخ به ما یادآوری میکند که برای هفده قرن، دولت گرجستان و کلیسای گرجستان با یکدیگر بنیان معنوی و ملی را بنا نهادند که ما را در سختترین دورانها حفظ و پاسداری کرد. ما از طریق آگاهی ملی خود و از طریق سه گنجینهی بزرگ دوام آوردهایم: عشق به میهن، وفاداری به سنتهایمان و ایمان استوار. آفرینندگان و نگهبانان اصلی این گنجینهها دو نهاد بودهاند - دولت گرجستان و کلیسای گرجستان. جدایی آنها ناممکن است. تاریخ آنها را نمیتوان از یکدیگر بازشناخت. آنها دو ستون یک پیکر واحد به نام گرجستان هستند. دو قرن پیش، هر دوی این ستونها از ما گرفته شد. ما با زنجیری زرین بسته شدیم و تلاش شد ایمانمان از ما سلب شود. از آن زمان، برای استقلال خود جنگیدهایم. و آن مبارزه هنوز بهطور کامل به پیروزی نرسیده است. یک قرن پیش، استقلال کلیسای گرجستان - خودمختاری آن - احیا شد. با این حال، احیای کلیسا بهعنوان ستونی از پیکر واحد گرجستان، نیازمند تلاشهای نیمقرنی پدر مقدس ما، ایلیای دوم بود. ما ثمرهی کار فوقالعادهی او را تنها چند هفته پیش شاهد بودیم، زمانی که شورای کلیسای گرجستان کاتولیکوس-پاتریارک را انتخاب کرد. ما دیدیم که خودمختاری واقعی و استقلال واقعی به چه معناست: زمانی که ما خود، فارغ از هرگونه تأثیر خارجی، سرنوشت خود را تعیین میکنیم. پنجرهی دیگری از تاریخ ۳۵ سال پیش گشوده شد، زمانی که ستون دوم خود را بازپس گرفتیم - دولتیمان که بارها از دست رفته بود، اما هرگز فراموش نشده بود. برای سی و پنج سال، روحانیون و مردم با هم مسیر پرخار دولتداری، استقلال واقعی و تثبیت حاکمیت را پیمودهاند. ما این مسیر را با پایداری، استواری و عزمی راسخ پیمودهایم. حتی امروز نیز کسانی هستند که میخواهند دو ستون ما را نابود کنند تا نتوانیم روی پای خود بایستیم؛ کسانی که میخواهند از قوانین آنها پیروی کنیم و قوانین خود را رها کنیم. با زنجیری زرین جدید بسته شده، آنها میخواهند ما همهچیز انجام دهیم بهجز یک دولت مستقل بودن؛ به دیگران تکیه کنیم بهجای اینکه به خودمان تکیه کنیم. این اتفاق نخواهد افتاد. ارادهی مردم گرجستان استوار است. مبارزهی چندصدسالهی ما متعلق به کلیسایی خودمختار و دولتی مستقل است. این فرمول آزادی گرجستان است. سربازان، به همین دلیل است که امروز، از طریق سوگند شما و از طریق اتحاد ما، به همهی کسانی که برای آزادی گرجستان جنگیدند ادای احترام میکنیم - به پاتریارکهای مقدس و پادشاهان مقدس ما، به مردانی که وقف خدا و میهن بودند، به نامآوران و گمنامان، به همهی کسانی که زندگی، تلاش و ایمان خود را به میهن ما تقدیم کردند. زنده باد گرجستان متحد، مستقل و آزاد! خداوند ما را حفظ کند!

Speech Delivered on Georgia’s Independence Day *** Congratulations on Georgia’s Independence Day! This day is a symbol of our national will, our love of freedom, and our sense of responsibility. In the history of Georgia, there has never been a time when the thought of and struggle for independence ceased. This tireless spirit was passed down from generation to generation, always awaiting another window of opportunity in history. Today’s celebration carries special significance, as this year we commemorate the 1,700th anniversary of declaring Christianity as a state religion of Georgia. This date reminds us that, for seventeen centuries, the Georgian state and the Georgian Church together forged the spiritual and national foundation that sustained and preserved us through the most difficult eras. We have endured through our national consciousness and through three greatest treasures: love of the country, devotion to our traditions, and steadfast faith. The principal creators and guardians of these treasures have been two institutions - the Georgian State and the Georgian Church. Their separation is impossible. Their histories cannot be told apart. They are the two pillars of a single body called Georgia. Two centuries ago, both of these pillars were taken from us. We were bound with a golden chain, and efforts were made to strip us of our faith. Since then, we have been fighting for our independence. And that struggle is still not fully won. A century ago, the independence of the Georgian Church - its autocephaly - was restored. Yet the revival of the Church as a pillar of Georgia’s unified body required a half-century-long efforts of our Holy Patriarch, Ilia II. We witnessed the fruit of his extraordinary work only a few weeks ago, when the Council of the Georgian Church elected the Catholicos-Patriarch. We saw what true autocephaly, true independence means: when we ourselves, free from any external influence, determine our own destiny. Another window of history opened 35 years ago, when we regained our second pillar - our statehood that was lost many times, yet never forgotten. For thirty-five years, clergy and people together have walked the thorny path of statehood, of becoming truly independent, and of securing sovereignty. We have walked it stubbornly, steadfastly, and with determination. Even today, there are those who wish to destroy our two pillars, so that we cannot stand on our own feet; those who wish us to follow their rules and abandon our own. Bound by a new golden chain, they would have us do everything except being an independent state; to lean on others rather than on ourselves. This will not happen. The will of the Georgian people is firm. Our centuries-long struggle belongs to an autocephalous Church and an independent state. This is Georgia’s formula for freedom. Soldiers, That is why today, through your oath and through our unity, we pay tribute to all who fought for Georgia’s freedom - to our holy patriarchs and holy kings, to men devoted to God and country, to the renowned and the unknown, to all those who devoted their lives, their labor, and their faith to our homeland. Long live a united, independent, and free Georgia! May God protect us!
