@magyarpeterMP Forsthoffer Ágnes
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has become the first parliament in the world to officially recognise the mass repressions carried out by the Soviet military administration against the civilian population of Zakarpattia in 1944–1946 and to condemn these crimes of the communist totalitarian regime. The Statement was supported by 261 Members of Parliament, with no votes against and no abstentions. This is a strong and consolidated position of the Ukrainian Parliament. It concerns the tragic events linked to the establishment of the Soviet military administration and the forced Sovietization of Zakarpattia: mass repressions against civilians, including people of Hungarian and German origin, deportations, extrajudicial executions, and persecution. Why is this important? A state must not only know its history, but also give a clear assessment of its tragic chapters. It is our duty to honour the memory of the victims of Soviet repression, restore historical truth, properly document these crimes, and do everything possible to ensure that the crimes of totalitarianism are never repeated. This is also important for Ukrainian-Hungarian relations. Ukraine is interested in strong relations with Hungary based on mutual respect, good-neighbourliness, and solidarity. An honest approach to the shared and tragic pages of our past, together with proper commemoration of their victims, should help our peoples understand each other better rather than divide us. @magyarpeterMP Forsthoffer Ágnes
