Nevertheless, the President also points out that taking into account the opinion of the Venice Commission – an internationally recognised authority in the field of constitutional law – could provide a solution in accordance with the rule of law to the constitutional conflict that has arisen between Hungary’s public law institutions, as this could provide a guarantee that a situation considered exceptional even by European standards will be resolved in accordance with fundamental constitutional principles. Finally, the President calls upon individuals and organisations that play a decisive role in shaping public discourse and political opinion to exercise their influence with full awareness of the responsibility their statements and positions entail. Their words and views can shape the way an entire society perceives and upholds the values of democracy, the rule of law, solidarity and humanity. Hungary is at a historic moment when the long-term direction of our country’s future may be decided, and when the way in which we shape our common future may be determined. At this historic moment, irreversible harm may be caused if those who have the opportunity to do so fail to stand up for the values of democracy and the rule of law. It is the firm conviction of the Head of State that the rule of law, solidarity and humanity are values to which we must all aspire to the highest standards at all times. This responsibility must not be diminished by the influence of negative experiences of the past – whether real or perceived – but must, on the contrary, be upheld and strengthened to the fullest extent.
