Yesterday, more than 150 young people took part in the first Chess in the City competition at Jamaica College, competing across several levels. Chess teaches us to think before we move, understand that our actions have consequences, plan ahead and exercise patience. It also teaches honesty, discipline and integrity. I want our young people to have more opportunities to take part in competitive activities, develop their skills and build character. Next year, we are looking at taking the competition to Montego Bay for Chess in the West, while also exploring Chess in the Park. Jamaica has already produced a chess grandmaster in Maurice Ashley, and I believe we have the talent to produce another one right here at home. Chess in the City will be an annual event, and I look forward to seeing this game reach more young Jamaicans across the country.
